A Spring in My Step

Last week on my daily walk with Miley I saw my first green bud of spring and let out an audible squeal of joy. I couldn’t help it. Not even the restrained emotions of my anglo-german DNA could keep me quiet. It’s the same feeling I get when I see my first snowflake of winter--only happier!

Within a week's time spring (so very aptly named) is literally “springing” into view: crocus are blooming, hyacinth buds are crowning and the air is filled with the twitterpated chatter of chickadees, robins and sparrows.

The only thing that dampens my euphoria is the envious knowledge that my in-laws began picking their Georgia spring flowers in January. Humph. But the reminder that they have bigger bugs to go with their bigger flowers is enough to sour-grape me back to reality and I get over it.

I love spring. I love the smell of the thawing soil, the discovery of Green bravely peaking through winter’s dreary brown blanket and the sounds of life stirring after such a long frozen silence. I even love the fact that our large (polite for “rotund”) cat, Andrew, caught 3 mice last week. At this point I welcome life in all its forms (minus those with eight legs).

And so comes my favorite time of year. Let the show begin!
